Katie's Story

Growing up in Radnor, Pennsylvania where her whole family was very involved the lacrosse community, Katie Samson developed a strong connection to the game. Katie played lacrosse at Radnor High School and was recruited to play at Middlebury College.

As a freshmen goaltender, Katie’s team won the Division III National Championship in the spring of 1999. In January 2000, Katie's life was changed forever after she suffered a severe spinal cord injury in a sledding accident and was immediately paralyzed from the chest down. Friends, family and the lacrosse community came together to establish the Katie Samson Foundation to rally support for one of its best and brightest. After tremendous support from family, friends, teammates, and mentors, Katie returned to Middlebury College and graduated with a joint degree in anthropology and art history. She helped coach her Middlebury team to two other National Championships and was chosen by her peers to carry the Olympic torch in the relay for the 2002 Olympic Games.

Currently, Katie has reached many of her life goals. After earning an advanced degree at the University of Arizona, Katie accepted a job as the curator of education for the Tucson Museum of Art. Since the time of her accident, Katie credits sports and recreation to boosting her confidence and attitude. She swims, plays tennis and skis with adaptive equipment. She is now a thriving adult enjoying life in Arizona.
